White Water Rafting

These tours are run by Hacienda Pozo Azul and take place in Costa Rica’s Sarapiquí region. Rafting is a thrilling way to get outside and explore Costa Rica. As you rush down the river, you’ll go over exciting rapids and pass some of the prettiest scenery in all of the country.

The Class II and III tour leaves at Hacienda’s put-in and runs 8 miles (13 km) to Chilamete. This two-hour trip runs year round and does not require any previous experience. The 14-foot rafts take four or six passengers. The minimum age is nine years old.

The Class IV tour offers more experienced paddlers a true whitewater adventure. Over the course of 7 miles (11 km) you’ll hit 12 class IV rapids. It’s two hours of pure adrenalin and rich scenery. This tour is only for physically fit people and is ridden regularly from May 31 to December 31 and on other dates depending on river conditions. The minimum age is fourteen years old.

The safari float is a three-hour ride along the beautiful lower Sarapiquí and its tributaries from the Braulio Carrillo National Park. The scenery here is stunning and often includes a variety of birds and animals. Remember to bring your cameras; you’re going to want them! A professional naturalist guide tags along to help you appreciate the beauty and diversity of the surrounding area. This tour puts in at Chilamate and takes out at Puerto Viejo. The minimum age for this tour is six years old.

All tour participants are fitted with life vests and safety helmets. Your guides provide you with safety instructions and you’ll also practice paddling before getting into your assigned positions on the boat. Safety kayaks accompany the Class II/III and Class IV tours. After the tour is over, you’ll drive back to Hacienda Pozo Azul to change and shower.
