The Lodge holds a plantation of over 300 cocoa trees. The Cocoa tree is one of the most important native species in Latin America. This chocolate eco-tour is educational as well as tasty and fun. On it you will learn the important properties of this valuable product besides the one everyone knows. The nutritional, medicinal and cultural values of Cacao are just as vital as its main by product, chocolate.
First is a trip to the plantation to see the 40 year old trees and learn how the Cocoa is harvested. At a nearby ranch you will learn about the history of Cacao. Next you will take part in the chocolate making process. You will be shown the process of fermentation and seed drying. You will be able to help roast and grind the fruit. Once you have completed the process you will have a chance to taste your creation, Cajuli or liquid chocolate. Personalize you drink by adding different spices to subtly change the flavor. After the drink you will learn how to make chocolate bars using the farms professional equipment. The tour takes 3 hours and is acceptable for ages 7 and up.

Traveler Comments
it was quite a trek to the farm, but it was nice to see this local farming initiative and learn about chocolate
I wish i discovered this place sooner because its not just a cacao plantation its a hotel/retreat with all kinds of amazing tours and an excellent restaurant. They don’t offer transportation from La Fortuna but the hotel front desk arranged a ride for us
It was so amazing to walk through a rainforest and see so many different tropical spices and foods growing. It was just a lovely pleasant experience and was very low key and relaxing.
