At the outset of the tour your guide will help you navigate border control, and then you’ll meet up with your Nicaraguan transport. First you’ll follow the Santa Fe Bridge over the San Juan River, which forms the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

After crossing the river you’ll arrive in the Nicaraguan town of San Carlos. You’ll see a historic fortress left behind by the Spanish and the boardwalk.

Your tour group will climb aboard a speedboat to visit a couple of islands of Solentiname Archipelago. This archipelago is made up of 36 islands. You’ll get to stop by Zapote Island and Zapotillo Island. Get ready to do some bird watching — these islands are home to cormorants, herons, pelicans, roseate spoonbills, and ospreys.

Then you’ll head to San Fernando Island where you’ll get to have lunch and sample some freshly caught fish from the lake. (Your guide can also provide a vegetarian option.)

Mancarron Island is the final stop on the tour. Here you’ll get to see a traditional country church that’s known as The Refuge. This gothic building has inspired well-known writers, songwriters, and poets, including Gabriel García Márquez. You’ll get to browse some of the local handicrafts at woodworking and painting galleries before you begin your return trip.
