Unlike a rainforest, a tropical dry forest builds up a significant amount of undergrowth. This creates a habitat for a number of ground-dwelling animals. On your trip, you might spot a plump, pig-like animal called a peccary. It usually has its snout buried in the undergrowth, looking for root vegetables to eat. If you’re especially observant, you might also spy an agouti. These tiny animals are closely related to guinea pigs, although they resemble squirrels.

Watch out for monkeys swinging from branch to branch. On this tour, you’re likely to see several species of monkey, including howler, spider, and whitefaced monkeys.

Eventually, you’ll reach the “chagüite,” which is a word locals use to refer to the banana plantation. This spot overlooks Salinas Bay and provides a scenic setting for a break from your trot through the forest.
